At least 4 republicans must have crossed over and all of the Democratic Caucus must have held the line.

If so, this looks very promising for the up coming fight!

Lieberman and Webb of Va. So that means that even more Republicans voted with the Democrats on this.

... for Governor Kaine, who aspires to take Senator Webb's place in a very important election. If there is one vote to burn to avoid rocking the boat in a tossup state, Virginia is it.

Just a guess on my part.

in Kaine?

If I was Virginia, I'd not vote for him, but write in a REAL progressive Democrat.

Webb could also have been voting his own conscience. If he feels everyone needs to pay more taxes to afford our giant budget, that could provoke a "no" vote, as well.

Every single damned Republican Senator up for reelection has to take that flak for the next three months, and the rest of them for the next four years.

But it's way larger than that, because the bought Republicans in the House are going to have to hold it hostage to try to get tax cuts for the rich tacked on. It won't work. Even if Dems in Congress cave in--they will not--the President will veto any extension for the rich.

So the Republicans either screw over their donors, and let the middle class cuts pass without an extension for the wealthy, or they screw over their voters, and and block the middle class tax cuts. No brainer there: they'll take the money and screw the people, like they always do.

You should be telling this to everyone you know: Republican voters can pay themselves next year by NOT VOTING in this election. It's true, and it's the most ingenious plan I've ever seen, carved in stone since December, 2010.

I think it's going to go down as one of the greatest political hat-tricks in American history.
