So we had a parakeet when I was a kid, Tweety.
During the day we let Tweety fly free. She pretty much stayed in the kitchen and dining room windows to watch the birds at our feeders.
One winter day Mom went out to hang the wet laundry to dry. Yes it was before we had a washer and dryer She put on her heavy jacket and didn't realize Tweety flew on her shoulder just as she was going through the door. She tried to turn around quick to get him back in the house, but he flew off.
She called for him and did everything she could think of to get him, but he just took off.
I found out when I came home from school. I was crushed. I spent the rest of daylight out there calling for him and whistling, we put his cage out. When it got dark we left the outdoor lights on all night, but never saw him again. We knew he probably would not have even survived the night, it was freezing cold, no water or food.
Was one of my sadder times as a young person. I loved my Tweety bird.
