(1,244 posts)"I could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose any voters." is so often misunderstood. It is not a matter of "they don't care" about the killing.
The authoritarian Strong Leader executing people actually gins up support among authoritarian followers, it excites them to see the power of their Strong Leader.
For now, until the supreme court decides, extra judicial executions are off the table for a US president. The US president can't just go around shooting people like Duterte in The Philippines. Executions of death row inmates are the legal analog to shooting someone on 5th Avenue. Very public, a display of raw power.
And surely people remember that in the final days of Trump's first term he went on an execution spree. Where were the opus dei "Catholic" protests about the sanctity of life then?
