Short of the rise of a very inspiring, visionary, brave and beloved national leader, serious action to get out of the cycle of violence Israel and the region has fallen into will be very difficult. Politics as usual will just lead to more of the same, or worse, I am afraid. And this is probably as true of the Palestinians as it is of Israel. Mahmoud Abbas is just a placekeeper, not a leader for improving anything.
