1. Modus operandi.

Reminds me of how my father at age 90 would get into fender benders and pay off the other drivers in order to avoid having the accidents reported to the DMV (losing license) and to his insurance company (losing his policy). No record of the accidents.

2. Oh, my goodness!

The closest I had to a grandfather finally gave up his license at 99. He accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake and got into an accident so everyone in the family insisted he give up his license. He was completely competent mentally and resented riding with anyone else, so when he rode with me, I had to hear about it the whole way, LOL. And his daughter who usually drove him had a handicapped license plate for the purpose, but of course I didn't so got very nervous parking in handicapped spots at his insistence. He was usually one of the kindest people I've ever known.

3. Interesting you should mention that . . . . .

The only thing that stopped my father was his literal last accident.

Hit the accelerator instead of the break and rear-ended a van in front of him at a gas station.

Older car w/o an airbag. His chest hit the steering column. Police were called and tickets were written.

In the meantime, he took a cab home and didn't tell anyone about the accident. Not me, not my siblings. And didn't follow up with doctors.

So, for a week, he had a slow bleed into his chest from a partially dissected aorta, which caused a heart attack, which could have been prevented. (That's what killed actor John Ritter.)

During that week, he desperately tried to get rid of his car, to hide the evidence.

He died and one month later, the DMV had mailed the suspension of his license.

4. Oh, I am so sorry! Yikes!

If only he'd gone to the hospital... but no one could know. I guess it's pride. My own father only rode with me once, it was on the way home after getting a biopsy at the hospital. Any other time, he had to be the one to drive. He traveled internationally, must have had some jet lag, but the agreement was that he drove to the airport (an hour away), then I drove his car home. Then when he returned it was just the opposite, I'd drive his car to pick him up and then he'd drive home. Pride.
