(By obscure, I mean a relatively little-known band, either still playing & recording, or played & recorded at least one album in the past)
"In their search, the whole wide world they roam, they roam.
Is there no place, for a girl and her dog?"
"Down by the train tracks you can hear a mournful sound
The chattering of teeth is heard for miles around, around"
(Both are lyrics from the same song)

A really nice guy, and a very good musician (He also played with NRPS)

(54,506 posts)He was almost normal, compared to Sanders. Sanders was nuts, but actually kind of funny, although triple X-rated. Saw them at the Pentagon demonstration in 1967, and at the Ambassador Theater in DC in 1967. A friend of mine did their sound system.
red dog 1
(27,917 posts)He did vocals.
According to Wikipedia, The Fugs 1st bass player was John Anderson, from the summer of 1965 to October of 1966.
From October of '66 to spring of '67, Chuck Rainey played bass. He "is credited for playing bass on more than 1,000 albums, and is one of the most recorded bass players in the history of recorded music."
The guy I knew, Billy Wolf, played bass for The Fugs from the winter of '68 to March of '69. He toured with them in Europe.
After that, he played with various groups, including The New Riders of the Purple Sage (One of my all-time-favorite bands)

(2,653 posts)Their first two albums we straight up great, better than most late Yes. Some would say. Saw them open for Gary Wright and also Robin Trower... They pulled it off live as well.
Am I supposed to add a song now? If so:
"This is the sound of poisons
The sickness no one knows
No one is crying for us this time
Our shapes are blurring under miracles of snow
Weave a circle round him three times
You have to plan your moves at these times
Our hearts are breaking
One more song to go
These eyes are blind
This is a pure thing
These hands I kiss
Tragic as anything
These eyes are blind
This is a pure thing
All splash and hiss
Beyond my measuring"

Thanks for the reminder of a song/album haven't heard in a while.
Be sure to check out their 2nd album "Fountains of Light", if you haven't already. It definitely continues that 'Yes adjacent' style, and has a very interesting production. Funny that, to this day, they deny that Yes was any influence at all. Riiight...
Starcastle is to Yes like Triumvirate is to ELP. No harm nor shame in that at all. Glad to have all those options, myself.

(24,759 posts)A tune by Dave Wilcox. I heard this band in Owen Sound, CA in the early 90's doing this. tune. Band was the Bearcats. Had a big black dude named Jimmie that played harmonica. Totally awesome. He did a version of "Wind Cries Mary" that rivaled Jimmy Hendrix.

(2,597 posts)Any Keller Williams fans?
So many great tunes to choose from, I went with this one...
Keller Williams
A break in the schedule
Sufficient coolant leak
Well we thought we were doing the right thing
Now you cannot be too picky
In Cheyenne on a Sunday
Then up walked the mechanic
With the perpendicular teeth
Perpendicular teeth, oh yeah
By the 17th hour
They pulled us up in the bay
And funky tooth started diggin'
Down under the hood
After clearing a path to the water pump
And taking a four hour break
By hour 27 we were all good
Then we sailed from Little America, oh yeah
Only two days later
On the way down to Deep Elem
We broke down in Oklahoma
Where a wind come behind the rain
We got towed to a town called Perry
Where a woman's car took priority
She had a kidney in a cooler
So two nights we had to stay
So she could deliver the kidney, oh yeah
When you go down to Deep Elem
Down to the Gypsy Tea Room
Tell 'em I'm broke down in Perry
And I'll try to make it back soon
Oh sweet mama
Your daddy got them Deep Elem blues
Oh sweet mama
Your daddy got them Deep Elem blues
Now I know I will be paying
On the concept after it's through
Unrealistic, maybe
But there's something I gots to do
I need a big ass bus with a satellite dish
A double-decker double-wide what I wish
I dream open eyed
That this be true
My double-decker double-wide, oh yeah
It's gonna have two icemakers
In both refrigerators
A silent but violent generator
To run the subwoofers and the disco ball
The escalator up to the dance hall
On the second floor with a giant sky light
Driving range and jacuzzi just right
For skinny dipping right after the show
At 80 miles an hour
It's worth all the dough
Until then I'll stand on the corner
With a sign that says
I will work for my
Double-decker double-wide
Perpendicular teeth
In Little America
Deliver the kidney
In my double-decker double-wide

Or more lyrics by the same band:
Ain't no bunk. Chicken Funk. This ain't no bunk. Chicken Funk. Huh!
Edited to add small clue: The Mississippi sax player in the first song, and lead vocals in the seconds song was invited, along with his new band, to perform in the chorus of "We Are The World" a mere ten years later. He got promoted to a solo vocal spot when Prince chickened/flaked out in the wee hours of the night.
Second clue: The band's best-known album isn't its own album and the band isn't even in the credits. The band played back up on Elvis Costello's first album, but for contractual reasons, couldnt be credited; the were initially identified as The Shamrocks in publicity releases (which is another amusing clue).

'bout a chick, in a black bikini.
Well, she looked so good, she couldn't be real...
She must be a magic genie!
But she disappeared around the corner...
All I saw were three doors, and the top of her bikini.
I made through the first door, there was a party going on...
I asked about the chick but what they said was freaky!
