Bernie Sanders to seek fourth term as U.S. senator from Vermont

Source: Burlington Free Press

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., announced on Monday that he is seeking a fourth term in the U.S. Senate.

Sanders, 82, is the longest serving independent member of Congress in the nation's history. He was elected to the U.S House of Representatives in 1991, where he served for 16 years, before joining the U.S Senate in 2007.

"I have been, and will be if re-elected, in a strong position to provide the kind of help that Vermonters need in these difficult times," Sanders said in a statement on Monday explaining his decision to run for re-election.

Sanders currently serves as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, where he has focused on reducing prescription drug prices. He is also a member of the Veterans Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Senate Budget Committee, where he previously served as chairman.

Strom Thurmond, who couldn't put on his own velcro shoes, wasn't too old. But he was a Republican.

10. I remember how a lot of the "Justice Democrats" and "Our Revolution" folks said that Nancy was "too old" (sigh) ...

... but they have yet to comment on Bernie's age. Interesting, no?

Personally, I prefer the experience and institutional knowledge that comes with age. There's a time and place to have fresh faces as our elected representatives, but I find it offensive when people want to "throw-the-bums-out" only because of their age.

But most of all, the hypocrisy that's now on display from groups like the one's I mentioned, is infuriating. What changed? Why was Nancy "too old" but Bernie is not? What changed? Why did they change their minds?

power forever, no "real grooming of a next generation of leadership" and "very little option for succession," "the left isn't really making a plan" and there "was a vacuum" that would be filled with "something even worse," and, like, there's no path to leadership and how terrible Democrats are corrupt Wall Street and Pelosi would never impeach Trump establishment old elites blah blah blah.

We used to make fun of the Soviet politburo leaders as old, overweight, out of touch geriatrics.

Now that personifies both political parties.

More proof our leaders are OUT OF TOUCH with the bulk of the people they represent.

It’s past the time to “pass the torch to a new generation.”

11. I'm truly and genuinely NOT a fan of Bernie, but I think we should avoid making ageist statements like that.

For the most part, older politicians have institutional knowledge and an understanding of how things work. They know how to negotiate and find common ground. They understand that you don't always get what you want and compromise is something to be embraced rather than avoided.

Older politicians bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. They have witnessed and navigated numerous historical events, giving them a deeper understanding of complex issues. Their long careers have allowed them to build strong relationships with other politicians and stakeholders, which can be crucial for effective negotiation and compromise. And when the time comes, their experience allows them to provide valuable mentorship and guidance to younger politicians.

There's a valid concern that some older politicians may be resistant to change or new ideas. However, many older politicians are actively engaged in learning and adapting to the changing world. --- INSTEAD, term limits could be implemented to address concerns about stagnation, while still allowing experienced politicians to serve for a reasonable amount of time.

12. Sanders is no young man but he is not out of touch.

His sharp focus on near-universally relatable economic issues, avoiding getting drawn into the wedgier issues in the culture war morass, and his stance on Gaza all put him in strong alignment with the younger voters in the Democratic orbit. There are others in both parties that fit the description of the politburo but Sanders isn't a strong example of that.

Please stop with the insults to older people. If you stay out of the line of fire, you might be one someday.
