(18,734 posts)I like it, it makes some good points, though Maher doesn't mind saying something he knows won't sell on the left. He was always that way, even on "Politically Incorrect".
What I hate about Real Time With Bill Maher, is he turns the audience mics way up so when I turn the TV up enough to hear him and his guests mumbling about something, the audience reaction knocks me off the chair. Especially the annoying guy who insists on hooting after every good point.
I don't know if it's canned but I feel it's clearly for the sake of his ego.

(9,217 posts)Some guy - and it feels like the same guy every week - who claps/laughs/cheers with "WOO!"
And once you hear it, you always hear it. Is it a stagehand or something? Who is WOO! Guy?! This is something I've become intensely curious about.
As for Maher, I still like him and watch. I don't always agree with him, but at least he's interesting enough to have his own opinion and not just repeat what he thinks his audience wants to hear (like Colbert constantly does). I don't consider myself a very partisan or tribal person. I'm a Democrat because Democratic policies far, far more align with how I think government should be. Not because I even particularly like many of the people in the politics (people should've heard me and my friends going off about Gavin Newsom this week at dinner. Hoo boy. Half of what was said would never last here). If you never think your own side is wrong or being stupid, that's not politics. You've joined a religion.
So Maher is very close to my speed. Not on everything, of course not. But liberal, thinks the Republican party has gone insane, and thinks that sometimes one's own side can be very dumb about something? Yep. I don't always share his opinions, but absolutely his disposition.

(18,734 posts)It's like he has his own microphone, and he might. It could be an audience plant he found at a pig calling contest.

(11,554 posts)fast forward through some people I really can't stand. I think Bill got lonely during covid living on his own and having to give up his party lifestyle and traveling. I think after a few years he got bitter about it instead of letting go and being glad its almost over. He knows and believes 3rd party is not the answer and hates trump so closer to election he will help more.
I have watched him since he was on ABC.

(13,211 posts)I don't agree with everything he says, but I think his claim to what is called "liberalism" is ridiculously strong. He's also brave and funny. We're lucky to have him as a contemporary.

(28,353 posts)respectfully disagree with you there. I find him somewhat amusing and occasionally insightful. He is a mildly successful entertainer. I shall have to leave the contemplation of his "tent pole" to others.

(7,748 posts)as I do abortion and religion. It's your body, your choice and don't really need anyone's opinion on the subjects.

(50,354 posts)If you have Covid and don't take precautions, you could kill all kinds of people. Bill Maher seems to whitewash the million plus Covid deaths we've had . . . so far. Public health is different from personal health and other personal choices.

(70,871 posts)I have been monitoring him for only a couple of years the way I did Tweety for ten. I like about 90%, the anti-religiosity, the high content on most of our issues although tinged with Libertarianism. I distrust his almost Third Way getting along with Deplorables, while good on Trump's authoritarianism and outright insanity. He has donated a million or two to our candidates. His flaunting his recreational chemicals is annoying. I like to notice which guests he kisses up to and which he's uncomfortable with - bromance with ROGAN and kissing up unsuccessfully to Kris KARDASHIAN, inexplicably uncomfortable with LeslieJONES. And in recent months he's incarnate as The Geezer and His Lawn, and repetitive on about five things - no marriage/kids, get along with Deplorables, hates Woke/Cancel, his White 1950s upbringing was great (sounds MAGA) and his network show got canceled.
I've only been aware of BURR a few months, via Conan and others claiming to admire him as a comic, not really a politics thing. But didn't like what I saw, abrasive and aggressive. But here with MAHER he turned his Prole chip on the shoulder into a slapdown on MAHER's pretentiousness. Liked it!

BURR: It isnt your thing. It isnt. Youre like that guy that has a fantasy football team and thinks hes a fucking GM. Thats exactly what it is. Like, why am I fucking listening to you like you like youve done something? What have you done in Washington? Nothing.

(748 posts)He's just another rich, privileged white man with no idea how real people live. He may not like Trump, but he's no ally to democrats. Never understood why he has so many sycophants here.

(70,871 posts)* As a DUer said about many of us attacking Tweety (Chris MATTHEWS), "When he's on our side there's nobody better." Same mioght apply to MAHER.
* He has donated a million or two to our Dem candidates.
* He claims to be a "Classical" Liberal, only griping about Woke and Cancel culture. Has got a tinge of Libertarianism that is part of us Libs -- Civil Liberties, personal choices.
I'd say he's a high percentage ally. When he criticizes Dem strategies it might be said to be constructive criticism to improve our chances of winning. Yes, he hosts some wingnuts but gives them the business more often than not. As I said, he's been turning into the Old Guy with His Lawn and says his upbringing in Whiteness was the best and should be the norm, which sounds MAGAT.

(748 posts)Does that give him a pass too?
Plus, Maher has said on his show when that was brought up, that hes no longer happy about it.
He supported Nader and actively attacked Al Gore, even after the election.
He regularly parrots right wing talking points, especially about Hunter Biden.
He is anti-vax, transphobic, sexist and bigoted.
Hes not an ally. Hes just another blowhard, rich white male TV celebrity. Sound familiar.

(19,415 posts)We were a few military leaders telling him no from the end of our Democracy. Some of them actually went along, but the important ones said no, he has the power to replace the important ones this time around.
Other than a full military coup, he was also close to rejecting the electors and sending it to the state governments to install him as President. This almost happened.

(12,720 posts)I liked Bill Maher some back in the 90's. Not as good as Carlin (or Franken), but not too bad, and mainly "kicking up" or questioning status quo. But then I was also okay with Ben Stein on "Win Ben's Money" because he and Kimmel stuck to generic topical humor and didn't go too far into right wing or macho jerk material. (I had also forgot Stein was a speechwriter for both Nixon and Ford before he acted in commercials and Ferris Bueller)
It wasn't till they started kicking down - the " I worked for my stuff, don't make me uncomfortable" or "why are they complaining when they got their rights/get free stuff, those ungrateful peons" - commentary and "jokes" that I stopped listening with any more respect than I would give a stopped clock.
Maher is a contrarian comedian. He may have started out "college progressive" comedian, but like most contrarians - and political true believers for that matter - the political spectrum is just a playground for egos and getting chicks. He could just as easily become Dennis Miller.
