I have not been near a TV this morning but is is astounding--almost unbelievable
That a speaker of the House would say they would interfere in criminal cases like this!!
@Acyn
Johnson: President Trump has done nothing wrong
it has to stop and youre going to see the Congress address this in every possible way because we need accountability. All these cases need to be dropped because they are a threat to our entire system

@ChidiNwatu
Holding someone accountable for their crimes is not a threat to our entire system. Despite Congress's lack of authority to halt these cases, it's still okay for Johnson to be wishful.

(33,227 posts)Isn't that the point of this trial, to discover and judge the depth of Chump's wrong behavior? Most Americans believe Chump broke the law, somehow. Not everyone is convinced how serious it was and is, but that's the reason for the trial.

Speaker Johnson Slams Prosecution of Former President Trump
House Speaker Mike Johnson criticizes the various cases against former President Trump in New York, D.C., Florida and Georgia, calling them "sham trials." He accuses Democrats in New York of trying to make a name for themselves by bring the hush money case to trial and calls out Judge Juan Merchan for threatening to jail the former president over gag order violations. Speaker Johnson says the goal appears to be to keep Trump in the courtroom and off the campaign trail, suggesting it is "election interference" and a double standard. close

House Republican Leadership News Conference
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told reporters he was not negotiating with GOP Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) and Thomas Massie (KY) over their threat to trigger a motion to vacate the speakership. The speaker held meetings with the two Republican rank-and-file members in recent days. When asked if he would return as speaker in the next Congress, Mr. Johnson said, I intend to lead this conference in the future. The speaker, along with other GOP leaders, also spoke about criminal cases against former President Trump, pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses and support for Israel.

(11,764 posts)What system is that? I mean, I know what system people like Johnson mean, though they would NEVER say it outright. Holding powerful people accountable within the same legal system that incarcerates average people is REPULSIVE to the powerful. While the Terror and Robespierre went off the rails, the initial outrage was that "ordinary citizens" were holding monarchs and nobles accountable in ANY way. That was the outrage. Ordinary people became concerned when the killing and repression did not abate and spilled over into everyday life.
People like Johnson and Conservatives see themselves as BETTER than everyone else and deserving of power and privilege. They see the world as fundamentally unequal and think that we should be bound by laws, while they are protected by laws. All of the Conservative talking heads have been saying that the trial is a "threat to democracy" and to our system of government, but they are LYING when they say that. They couldn't care less about democracy. They are concerned that the former president being held accountable would break the ceiling and that any one of them could face actual scrutiny and justice.
Conservatives coming out like this shows that they have no respect for the actual system of government that was put into place after the Revolution. While yes, it is not a direct democracy and yes, there were still elitist sentiments in factions of the Founders, the purpose of the systems set up was to make the government in many ways ACCOUNTABLE to the CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED. We are the governed. We are using DUE PROCESS and the RULE OF LAW to hold a person accountable for alleged crimes. It shouldn't matter who the defendant is or was. If the phrase, "Justice is Blind" is actually to be believed, then what should matter is the allegations and the evidence. If Trump is acquitted, it would suck, but if the government cannot bring sufficient evidence to convict beyond a reasonable doubt, then Trump deserves to be acquitted.
There absolutely is a two tiered justice system, but contrary to all the stupid squawking by Conservatives, Trump isn't receiving "special scrutiny" he is benefitting from the special treatment that is afforded to all wealthy and powerful people. Unfortunately, in our justice system, the divide is not political it is economic. Wealthy people can afford better attorneys, they can delay, they can use loopholes, and they get special consideration. The rest of us are much more likely to suffer adverse consequences from attention from the criminal justice system than any wealthy person. This "system" that I just described in my last sentences, is the "our system" that Johnson and other idiots are talking about.
These idiots need to be challenged, but our media is also very weak at holding people to account. They should be questioned as to why they think it is okay to lock Black, Brown, and poor people up for 20 years for minor possession of cannabis, but that it is a "threat to our system" to use that same justice system to try someone for business document fraud in connection with elections fraud. Some Black teenager getting caught with a few ounces of weed has zero effect on my daily life or the lives of anyone else, except maybe his family. A wealthy asshole lying about his affairs, committing document fraud after paying off a woman to hide an affair so that he could become president of the United States, and said asshole being so incompetent that he helped to cause the deaths of over 1 MILLION Americans in the span of 2 years, has much more effect on everyone's daily life. That Black teenager sits in a cell in Rikers for 3 to 5 years while the rich asshole gets to run for president ... again.

(11,764 posts)It is a spectrum. While any political ideology is susceptible to authoritarianism, Conservatism is specifically susceptible to Fascism. Remember that Mussolini and Hitler were right wing reactionaries that mimicked left wing rhetoric, but fundamentally believed in hierarchy which is a right wing phenomena. Conservative adhere to the same ideas of hierarchy. The differences in application for the ideologies are "who" is in charge and some of the methods that are used to obtain and maintain power. Conservatives think that wealthy people of a certain hue are best suited for leadership, but color might be subservient to wealth. Conservatives (the leaders, not the followers) DO NOT believe in equality or equity. When equality and equity are not in your framework of understanding the world, it isn't too difficult to get to rigid class structure and using systems of power to freeze them into place.
What the MAGA followers fail to understand is that there is only so much room at the top of the pyramid and that their leaders will expect them to "know their place" along with the rest of us. They will get a rude awakening about their own power and privilege (or lack thereof) if Conservatives are allowed to fully realize their plans for society.

(10,156 posts)with Johnson. Problem is they can make fools of themselves and say whatever Trump wants them to say but they have no power to stop anything and may end up in a court of law themselves if they don't watch it. The republicans know there is not much they can do but be annoying gnats buzzing around, but it it keeps their orange god off their back they are quite willing to totally humiliating themselves.

The U.S. Constitution establishes three separate but equal branches of government: the legislative branch (makes the law), the executive branch (enforces the law), and the judicial branch (interprets the law).
