As an old guy, I wonder how many adults remember and/or recognize the salient tidbits from the murder trial. What struck at the time was the way the Bronco chase preempted other programming. In my mind, more than any other single event, it marked the transition from news based on pedagogical and journalistic values to tabloid sensationalism and the mad scramble for eyeballs and ad dollars.

Several white officers were found "not guilty" of beating Rodney King.

The jury made up it's mind they that were going to find OJ "not guilty" as a response to the Rodney King beating.
OJ "not guilty" was the perfect protest.

Analogies are imperfect. The support for OJ was in part a response to the injustice of the Rodney King trial, but also the experience of a lifetime of injustice from the legal system. Trump is telling his supporters that they too are victims of injustice - but it's nonsense. He is catering to racism and a profound sense of insufficient privilege.
