The photo is hilarious. Hanover can be really really RED. After the appointed School Board renamed Lee-Davis High school (I was shocked) to Mechanicsville High several of the Board were replaced. Good for her.
After being honored on Wednesday, Lindley took to the podium thanking the board for their censorship of her Gold Award, the highest award within the Girl Scouts organization. She said the summary of her work commended at the meeting did not match the description she submitted.
Her summary detailed her creation of Banned Book Nooks, which granted kids across the county access to pieces of literature the school board removed from school shelves. Her work also involved the creation of a Free-To-Read app, which educates users about banned books and where to find them. The board chose to leave out the word banned and limited describing pieces of Lindleys project, effectively, in Lindleys words, censoring her award.
Things need to change in Hanover County to reverse the tide of book bans, Lindley said. Our school board banned books because of a fundamental ignorance of the importance of celebrating diverse perspectives.

After the Hanover County School Board banned 19 books last June, Kate Lindley launched Free to Read, her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

Honestly at first I just started laughing, recalled Lindley, a senior at Maggie L. Walker Governors School whos headed to Georgia Tech to study computer science.

(182,970 posts)I tend to give the papers a look over just to see whats above the gold. That pic was front and center. It mustve pissed someone off - like how I used to turn National Enquirers around in 2016.
Id seen that pic before and thought she was some Hanover County Princess of the Hay Field. Hanover is sort of a white flight refuge for people who think western Henrico has become a little too uh mixed. Its also become a place for more educated people from the north and elsewhere to find good land prices. Ive played at the Hanover Country Club a few times and there are some permanent (4x4s set in cement) road signs that have gone from BENGHAZI to RIGGED to whatever. More than one of these signs.
Im glad I was wrong about her and her story. Good for her. Suck it rednecks especially Herzberg. Fight as they might it is changing. Shes right on all accounts.

(1,564 posts). . . the Supervisors edited then read aloud her award certificate without references to banned books. So, when she spoke to thank them, she read her full award commendation complete with the words the Supervisors left out them she proceeded to rip them all new assholes by very gently calling out their bullshit. All the while with a slight smile.
Oh, and watch the video at the OP link -- catch her sly side-eye as the doctored version of her commendation is read -- she expected this and she was cocked, loaded, and ready for them. This young lady is an exemplar of who will save this country.

(182,970 posts)Maggie Walker is the Governors school. Very hard to get into. My daughter applied and got in the waiting list. Not bad but Im kind of glad she didnt go. They got rid of Valedictorian and other awards not so everyone gets a trophy but for health reasons. No one near the top slept the last month or so and I heard a pretty crazy story about a guy sabotaging his work group so he could hurt their ranking.
See my post #3 for background on Hanover. It is changing due to people moving in
some of them.

From The Daily Progress article:
Board proclamations are issued with a vote by the Board. Some books that contain porn and sexually explicit content were de-selected from Hanover Public Schools and I support that action. Books with porn and sexually explicit content do not have my support for a Board proclamation.
Our young people are smarter than these politicians think. They can smell the stench of rank hypocrisy a country mile away. They arent fooled by folks spouting platitudes about the Constitution while supporting politicians who forswear their oath to the document as they toss lit matchsticks at the First Amendment.
They can distinguish a political exercise from an educational one.

(13,197 posts)Parents aren't just ATMs and food and shelter providers. They aren't mentioned in the article at all. There should be a technical answer to this problem. This shouldn't require a random student to enact a trite "hero drama" for the media and showboaters of all political persuasions to feed their egos on.
